Advanced Pricing: Promotions and Incentive Best Practices

A promotion consists of all non-tech activities that marketers use to try to increase sales over a specific period of time.
  • Use buy X get Y promotions when the scope/criteria and benefit products are different. For example, buy a laptop and get a 10% discount on the purchase of extra monitor or other accessories.
  • Promotion should be explicitly selected by the user during the cart creation. So, avoid setting the Auto apply flag as 'TRUE' during the Promotion set up. This set up is performance intensive.
  • Define the scope of the Promotion as specifically as possible. Include the criteria only for further qualifications. This helps with better performance.
  • From a UI perspective, maintain the Promotion/Incentive code in capitals. Also avoid the use of special characters.
  • Maintain start and expiration dates very precisely. In case promotion has crossed these dates, mark the active flag as 'False' in the summary section. This helps while quoting in a change order scenario.
  • Use Product family and Product Group only when required. Specify Product scope as much as possible.
  • Use out of the box Price points in the benefits section. Use of any other price point will require use of pricing callback.
  • If required, use approval of workflows for promotions that exceed certain thresholds or require management oversight."
  • Always test promotions in a sandbox or QA environment before deploying production.
  • Validate that promotions apply as expected for all relevant scenarios (including edge cases)
  • Regularly review and retire outdated or under performing promotions
  • Document your promotion of logic and naming conventions for future reference and team collaboration.
  • Avoid overlapping or conflicting promotions by using the "Combine with Other Promotion?" and "Cannot combine with these promotions" settings.
