Using Alternate Clauses
An alternate clause can be inserted or swapped for any generated agreement document that contains the primary clause. All Alternate Clauses are visible and available from the Doc Clauses Tab under the Work Tab of the main Contracts Tab.
- Log in to X-Author for Contracts Advanced
- Click the Contracts tab
- Navigate to and check-out an agreement document you want to redline
- Click the Doc Clauses tab
- Search for your primary clauses first. The alternate clause icon of two split arrows displays if there is an alternate clause available for a primary clause.
- Click the three vertical dots beside the alternate clause icon
- Click the down arrow for any of the alternate clauses listed to view the clause text and guidance
- Click Replace to swap the standard clause with the alternate clause
- Make sure your Microsoft Word Font is the same as the clause you want to insert or your font will override the style of the clause
When you unlock a read-only clause using the Unlock Clause option, and then swap it with another clause, X-Author for Contracts Advanced retains the original clause's read-only status upon check-in if the parent clause was read-only during contract generation.
If the clause was originally read-only and is swapped without being re-locked, it remains read-only in the checked-in document.
If the clause is re-locked after swapping, it remains read-only in the checked-in document.
- Click on the Doc Clause tab and verify that the alternate clause you selected
is now in the current document clauses.Note:
You can swap a standard clause marked as read-only with an alternate clause.
You can swap clauses containing repeat sections, tables, and smart/read-only fields in a contract document from Doc Clauses.
The clause does not inherit or convert into a smart clause under any circumstance.
When generating a contract document with a template containing a Standard Clause that includes a Drop Down List Content Control (With the content control "cannot be deleted" property set to TRUE), and then attempting to swap it with an Alternate Clause from the Doc Clauses pane, the following occurs:
Clause swapping is supported and properties are maintained if you have Word Version 2411 (Build 18227.20152) with Word API of 1.9 or greater. The system currently supports clause swapping for the following external content controls:
Picklist
Date
Text
Rich Text
Combo Box
Clause swapping is not supported if you have Word Version 2405 (Build 17628.20110) with Word API lower than 1.9. You will receive a warning message that the system is unable to swap the clause.
