Error Management
Technical Errors
The Quote can raise technical errors for different causes:
- A data source returns an error when called
- A calculation is in error
- There is a misconfiguration in the quote model, resulting in odd behaviors
When an error is triggered, a red banner is displayed in the UI.
Technical errors are also visible thanks to an icon displayed next to the quote title with an error count:
In addition, if there are technical errors in cells, the technical error icon is displayed at the line level.
On mouse hovering the icon, you can see details on the corresponding errors when relevant and take action to solve them.
ROOT ERRORS VS PROPAGATED ERRORS
When a column/field is in technical error, if this column/field is used to compute another column/field, the computed element is also in technical error. In this case, the technical error is
propagated. In order to solve a propagated error, the initial error (root error) must be solved. Propagated errors are displayed with a different icon in order to allow the user to identify easily root
errors.
INSPECT THE ERROR
For administrators, when an element is in technical error, on hover, a tooltip contains an Inspect link. By clicking on this link, the error inspector is opened so that you can get more information to solve the error (see Error inspector).
Validation Errors
In contrast to technical errors that are managed mostly by the system, validation errors are the result of functional errors happening as a consequence of a specific setup by the CPQ Administrator.
It could be the consequence of the following events:
- When you try to add a product that is already part of the quote, whereas the CPQ Admin forbids the duplicated lines in the quote model.
- When a Configurable Product is only partially completed (see below).
- When a Required field or cell has no value yet.
- When the criteria of a validation rule are not met by a field or cell value.
Those validation errors are meant to guide you during the quoting process to precisely highlight information and actions expected from you.
Validation errors can be spotted in the quote:
- at the cell level:
- at the line level (if at least one cell of the line is in validation error):
- at the field level:
Technical vs. Validation Errors
- If both types of errors are present on a given line, cell, or field, then the technical error icon is displayed and not the validation error icon. The detail of both types of errors is given on mouse hover over the corresponding icon.
Errors and Configurable Products
A Configurable Product can be in technical and/or validation error in the Quote due to a specific action, or simply because of an error coming from the Configuration Process itself.
It could also happen that the Configuration Process has not been fully completed.
The Quote can handle those situations. Even if the configurable product is inconsistent, you can still add and update it in the Quote.
In the Quote interface, an error icon is displayed on the Configurable Product root line.
As a given Configurable Product can have error from the Quote and/or from the Configuration, the error icon behaves as follows:
- If the product has errors from the Quote only, then the technical error icon is displayed on the root line. Details on the errors are visible in a tooltip on mouse hover of the icon.
- If the product has errors, both from the Quote and the Configurator, then the same error icon as above is displayed on the root line. Details on the errors are visible in a tooltip on mouse hover of the icon, with a differentiation of Quote errors vs. Configuration errors.
- If the product has errors from the Configurator only, then the icon displayed on the root line differs in the following cases:
- Error in the Configuration: a technical error icon is displayed
- Configuration incomplete: a validation error icon is displayed on the root line
- Configuration completed: a dedicated completion icon is displayed
Error Browser
The Error Browser is where you can consult both the technical and validation errors detected on the quote.
The Error browser can be setup in the Quote Designer.
