Smart fields are specialized fields that can retain the field definition even after the merge service generates the contract document. This feature helps with reconciling the document, which is detailed in the Reconciling Contract Document section. Smart fields are intended for parts of a contract that would normally be negotiated. They are usually represented by small chunks of text, such as dates, categories, and numeric values, and are not intended to hold large amounts of text. If necessary, use smart clauses instead.

To mark a template field as smart

  1. Open a template.

  2. Click the Unlock () icon and select Acquire.

  3. In the Templates pane, go to Data > Fields.
  4. The Fields pane lists all fields in your template. Use the Search box to find a specific field by keyword.

  5. Select the field from the list, click the More () icon adjacent to the field name, and click the Settings option.

Alternatively, you can mark a field as "smart" when inserting it into a template via Data > Fields > Insert > Settings. For more details, see Inserting Fields in a Template
  6. In the Field Settings pane, enable the Mark as Smart Field toggle and click Save.

In the Fields list, you can see the bulb () symbol next to the field name link. To turn off a field's smartness, toggle the Smart Field switch in the Settings page off.

Lookup fields cannot be marked as Smart Fields; therefore, the option to designate them as Smart Fields is not visible.
