Use Case: Creating Attribute Value Matrices
Ensure that you have met the following prerequisites:
- Product attributes (for example, Color, HDD, RAM, Screen Size, and Fingerprint Reader) are created in the Product Attribute Value object.
- Product attributes are assigned to a Product Attribute Group and associated with the target product or category.
- You have administrative permissions to create product rules and execute maintenance jobs in Conga CPQ.
This use case provides an example of how to create attribute value matrices to drive product selection. Your implementation may vary. For more about creating attribute value matrices, see Creating Attribute Value Matrices.
Business Context
To simplify complex product configurations and prevent ordering errors, organizations use Attribute Value Matrices within Conga CPQ. Attribute Value Matrices associate up to five product attributes to establish a compatibility table of valid combinations. Because attributes in the matrix are bi-directional, selecting a value for one attribute dynamically filters the available options for all other associated attributes in real time, ensuring that sales representatives and customers select only feasible product configurations.
Actors
- CPQ Administrator: Configures product attributes, builds the Attribute Value Matrix compatibility table, and executes maintenance jobs.
- Sales Representative / Customer: Selects product attributes in the shopping cart during product configuration.
- CPQ System: Evaluates matrix constraints bi-directionally and dynamically updates attribute picklist options.
Scenario
A sales administrator at Amttus, a laptop manufacturer, wants to set up an Attribute Value Matrix to guide product selection for laptops. The manufacturer offers laptop models (A-560, A-560m, A-440, A-440m, A-320, and A-320m) characterized by five primary attributes: Color, HDD, RAM, Screen Size, and Fingerprint Reader.
The valid product and attribute relationships are defined as follows:
| Product | Color | HDD | RAM | Screen Size | Fingerprint Reader |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-560 | Black | 1 TB | 8 GB | 14 HD | Yes |
| A-560m | Black | 2 TB | 16 GB | 14 HD | Yes |
| A-440 | White | 500 GB | 4 GB | 15 | Yes |
| A-440m | White | 500 GB | 8 GB | 15 HD | Yes |
| A-320 | Black | 1 TB | 8 GB | 14 | No |
| A-320m | White | 1 TB | 16 GB | 14 HD | Yes |
The Attribute Value Matrix is created and active. When a user selects Color = Black from the picklist menu during product configuration in the shopping cart, CPQ dynamically filters the remaining attribute options:
- HDD: 1 TB and 2 TB
- RAM: 8 GB and 16 GB
- Screen Size: 14 and 14 HD
- Fingerprint Reader: Yes and No
Invalid attribute combinations are automatically hidden or constrained, eliminating invalid configurations and streamlining quote generation.
Navigate to the CPQ shopping cart, add a laptop product to the cart, click Configure, and test bi-directional attribute filtering by selecting various attribute values.
