Iterations

Information coming from the Spreadsheet Grids can be used to create iterative content in the generated document. To insert this type of content dynamically the user will benefit from the Add Iteration Function.

How to Add an Iteration

The insertion of the iteration is done in a new paragraph after the cursor position. To create a table, the user must follow this process:

1Place the cursor in the Word document where the iteration should be inserted after In the add-in on the Home tab, click on the + next to the Iteration menu.
2Select the data context for the iteration by choosing a component in the drop-down list. The Data Context is either: View/Component: User can choose a View/Component Parent source: If iteration is placed in a parent iteration the user can use parent Data Context Useful Tip: Type text in the drop-down lists to filter the results.
3Click on the ADD ITERATION button
4The iteration tags appear in the Word document. The iteration is composed by two tags surrounding the content. If there is no active selection the content is paragraph containing the cursor. If a selection is active the content is all the paragraphs touched by the selection. The begin iteration tag is inserted in a new paragraph before the content. The end iteration tag is inserted in a new paragraph after the content.

How to Edit an Iteration

The edit iteration component allows to see the iteration properties and details of inside selection.

In the upper part of the add-in panel, the user can see the iteration properties

2The user can edit: The name of the iteration tag (except the fixed “#Type_ID_” section) The component (the Data Context)

Once the edits have been made the user must click on the button to save the changes. If the user needs to cancel and not save the changes they must click on .

ITERATION CRITERIA TAB

The user has to set an iteration criteria for the iteration through the use of the conditions (learn more about conditions here: Conditions.

Each time the condition is met by a line of the source grid (component chosen when creating the iteration) the content placed between the two iteration tags (BeginIteration and EndIteration) will be created.

The iteration criteria tab enables the user to define what will be the criteria to repeat the content depending on conditions.

1On the Iteration criteria tab, click on the Edit button.
2Click + Add condition to create a new iteration condition. The user can set a single condition or a combination of multiple conditions. More information on conditions can be found here: Conditions
3Set the condition by choosing: the column data tag that will be used to filter the operator the value

5The user will then set the content on the Word document side. In our example below, for each item found in the Data Context TermGrid matching the Iteration criteria, the iteration will repeat the sentence starting with “The minimum quantity…” and will the replace the tags #Col_47_SYSROWITEM and #Col_48_minQty with their value in the quote.

Anytime during the creation of an iteration, the user can navigate to the + tab. The user will be presented with the available actions:

  • ADD TAG

    allowing the user to add a Field or a Column tag

  • ADD IMAGE

    allowing the user to add a Dynamic Image tag

  • ADD TABLE

    allowing the user to add Table tags

  • ADD SECTION

    allowing the user to add Section tags

  • ADD ITERATION

    allowing the user to add Iteration tags

If the user select a tag in the table, the corresponding edit interface will appear in the add-in panel allowing to change the formatting of this specific tag.

How to Delete an Iteration

To delete an iteration the user can:

  • delete the whole iteration from the Begin tag to the End tag on the Word document side.
  • click on the delete button in the Edit iteration panel

Limitations

Cannot be placed in header and footer of the Word document. Iteration tags must not be followed by line break or page break.
